A Bridge between China and the Rest of the World

Mar 9: "How China Made Shakespeare Its Own", a talk by Nancy Pellegrini

RASBJ members in good standing are invited to this special talk, held on the grounds of the British Embassy.

The story of Shakespeare in China is one of cultural blending and reinvention. By exploring traditional opera-style productions, avant-garde adaptations, Marxist-inspired criticism, revolutionary translation methods, teaching approaches and more, Nancy Pellegrini will explain how Shakespeare rose from inauspicious Chinese beginnings to become a lauded and popular figure – in other words, the People’s Bard.

SPEAKER BIO: Nancy Pellegrini is the author of the Penguin Special, The People’s Bard: How China Made Shakespeare Its Own (Penguin Random House 2016). Nancy has been based in Beijing for seventeen years, covering China’s performing arts and classical music scene since 2005. She is the stage editor and writer for Time Out Beijing and Time Out Shanghai magazines, and has written on China’s performing arts and culture for Christian Science Monitor, South China Morning Post, The British Library Literature Project, Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography, Tatler, The Strad, Gramophone, International Piano, and Modern Painters, among others.
